liothyronine is a manufactured form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (t3). it is most commonly used to treat hypothyroidism and myxedema coma. it is generally less preferred than levothyroxine. it can be taken by mouth or by injection into a vein.

side effects may occur from excessive doses. this may include weight loss, fever, headache, anxiety, trouble sleeping, arrythmias, and heart failure. use in pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally safe. regular blood tests are recommended to verify the appropriateness of the dose being taken.

liothyronine was approved for medical use in 1956. it is available as a generic medication. a month's supply in the united kingdom costs the nhs about gb?247 as of 2019. in the united states the wholesale cost of this amount is about us$22.40. in 2017, it was the 252nd most commonly prescribed medication in the united states, with more than one million prescriptions.

medical uses
liothyronine is a generally less preferred option to levothyroxine (t4) for people with hypothyroidism. it may be used when there is an impaired conversion of t4 to t3 in peripheral tissues. the dose of liothyronine for hypothyroidism is a lower amount than levothyroxine due it being a higher concentrated synthetic medication. about 25 µg of liothyronine is equivalent to 100 µg of levothyroxine.

in thyroid cancer or graves' disease, ablation therapy with radioactive iodine (131i) can be used to remove trace thyroid tissue that may remain after thyroidectomy (surgical excision of the gland). for 131i therapy to be effective, the trace thyroid tissue must be avid to iodine, which is achieved by elevating the person's tsh levels. for patients taking levothyroxine, tsh may be boosted by discontinuing levothyroxine for 3–6 weeks. this long period of hormone withdrawal is required because of levothyroxine's relatively long biological half-life, and may result in symptoms of hypothyroidism in the patient. the shorter half-life of liothyronine permits a withdrawal period of two weeks, which may minimize hypothyroidism symptoms. one protocol is to discontinue levothyroxine, then prescribe liothyronine while the t4 levels are falling, and finally stop the liothyronine two weeks before the radioactive iodine treatment.

liothyronine may also be used for myxedema coma because of its quicker onset of action when compared to levothyroxine. use for the treatment of obesity is not recommended.

selamectin (trade names, revolt manufactured by aurora pharmaceutical & revolution manufactured by zoetis ) is a topical parasiticide and anthelminthic used on dogs and cats. it treats and prevents infections of heartworms, fleas, ear mites, sarcoptic mange (scabies), and certain types of ticks in dogs, and prevents heartworms, fleas, ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms in cats. it is structurally related to ivermectin and milbemycin. selamectin is not approved for human use.

usage
the drug is applied topically. it is isopropyl alcohol based, packaged according to its varying dosage sizes and applied once monthly. it is not miscible in water.

selamectin disables parasites by activating glutamate-gated chloride channels at muscle synapses. selamectin activates the chloride channel without desensitization, allowing chloride ions to enter the nerve cells and causing neuromuscular paralysis, impaired muscular contraction, and eventual death.

the substance fights both internal and surface parasitic infection. absorbed into the body through the skin and hair follicles, it travels through the bloodstream, intestines, and sebaceous glands; parasites ingest the drug when they feed on the animal's blood or secretions.

selamectin has been found to be safe and effective in a 2003 review.

selamectin has high safety ratings, with less than 1% of pets displaying side effectsneeded]. in cases where side-effects do occur, they most often include passing irritation or hair loss at the application site. symptoms beyond these (such as drooling, rapid breathing, lack of coordination, vomiting, or diarrhea) could be due to shock as a result of selamectin killing heartworms or other vulnerable parasites present at high levels in the bloodstreams of dogs.needed] this would be a reaction due to undetected or underestimated infections prior to using the medication, rather than an actual allergic reaction to the drug itself.

daptomycin, sold under the brand name cubicin among others, is a lipopeptide antibiotic used in the treatment of systemic and life-threatening infections caused by gram-positive organisms. it is a naturally occurring compound found in the soil saprotroph streptomyces roseosporus. its distinct mechanism of action makes it useful in treating infections caused by multiple drug-resistant bacteria.

daptomycin was removed from the world health organization's list of essential medicines in 2019. the world health organization classifies daptomycin as critically important for human medicine.

medical uses
daptomycin is indicated for use in adults in the united states for skin and skin structure infections caused by gram-positive infections, s. aureus bacteraemia, and right-sided s. aureus endocarditis. it binds avidly to pulmonary surfactant, so cannot be used in the treatment of pneumonia. there seems to be a difference in working daptomycin on hematogenous pneumonia.

adverse effects
common adverse drug reactions associated with daptomycin therapy include:

cardiovascular: low blood pressure, high blood pressure, swelling
central nervous system: insomnia
dermatological: rash
gastrointestinal: diarrhea, abdominal pain
hematological: eosinophilia
respiratory: dyspnea
other: injection site reactions, fever, hypersensitivity
less common, but serious adverse events reported in the literature include

hepatotoxicity: elevated transaminases
nephrotoxicity: acute kidney injury from rhabdomyolysis
also, myopathy and rhabdomyolysis have been reported in patients simultaneously taking statins, but whether this is due entirely to the statin or whether daptomycin potentiates this effect is unknown. due to the limited data available, the manufacturer recommends that statins be temporarily discontinued while the patient is receiving daptomycin therapy. creatine kinase levels are usually checked regularly while individuals undergo daptomycin therapy.

in july 2010, the fda issued a warning that daptomycin could cause life-threatening eosinophilic pneumonia. the fda said it had identified seven confirmed cases of eosinophilic pneumonia between 2004 and 2010 and an additional 36 possible cases. the seven confirmed victims were all older than 60 and symptoms appeared within two weeks of initiation of therapy.
